Seattle Plastic Bag Ban Leading to Increased Shoplifting

-By Warner Todd Huston

In a hilarious example of the unintended consequences of stupid liberal policies, the plastic bag ban in stores in Seattle, Washington has resulted not is the relief of global warming–or whatever–but in a huge spike in shoplifting.

About eight months ago the city fathers… or I mean city nannies… banned plastic bags for stores to put purchased goods in as customers leave stores. The nannies instead encouraged people to bring their own, reusable bags. Great. We are saving the environment, er sumpthing.

So what has happened after eight months?

Thousands of dollars of products have mysteriously disappeared into those bags because stores can’t figure out who has purchased something and who hasn’t.

As Nick Allen reports,

Shopper Ramona Lund said: “I’ve actually seen it happen. You can just see when they walk through and they load up their bag and they just go out the door.”

Mike Duke, who runs the Lake City Grocery Outlet, said that since the ban started in July he has lost at least $5,000 (£3,300) in produce, and up to $4,000 (£2,700) in frozen food. He told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer newspaper: “We’ve never lost that much before.”

Oopsie. You are all now allowed to laugh at these lib’s idiocy.
