What is the Fourth of July without Fireworks? Almost non-existent. Well, this Fourth of July will not have the same boom and patriotic celebration as it has had in the past over some military bases.
With Obama spending $100 million on his trip to Africa and now giving seven billion dollars to Africa, I guess that means something is just going to have to go, why not cut our patriotic Fourth of July fireworks celebration. Logical, right?
Does anyone else see something wrong with this picture? With the massive budget cuts, some military bases can no longer afford Independence Day fireworks, according to MSN. Wait, wait, wait…perhaps I didn’t make the connection clear, Obama is giving money to the Syrian rebels, who have proven to be our enemies, but has cut military funding, the very people who fight to preserve our liberty, so now it can’t afford to hold its annual fireworks show?
Independence Day celebrations have been canceled at the North Carolina bases, Camp Lejeune Marine Corps Base and the Army’s Fort Bragg. The Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany, Ga has also had to scrap its annual Fourth of July Celebration.
Why? Money–or lack thereof, so they say.
We all realize that sequestration hit the country hard back in March when Congress had to cut spending by $85 billion across the board. Of course, the military suffered tremendously. Does this mean that Obama should be choosing to give money to our enemies over celebrating Independence Day?
Last year’s Independence Day at Camp Lejeune about $100,000, including $25,000 for the fireworks.Officials said that they couldn’t justify paying such an amount when federal workers were losing their jobs.
This decision has hit several people very hard.
Brandy Rhoad Stowe says to MSNB the fireworks at Camp Lejeune were always spectacular, and she said that she and her kids, ages 3 and 9, will miss them this year.
“I know fireworks might seem silly to other people,” Stowe said in an interview. “But what is the Fourth of July without fireworks?”
Stowe says she understands the budgets cuts but still feels a little shortchanged.
“It’s just a bummer for the kids,” she said. “It’s like the Grinch stealing Christmas.”
Marines and their families at Lejeune have the option to participate in other free activities — golf, bowling, skeet shooting, archery and movies.
Isn’t is encouraging that Obama knows how to enjoy a nice luxurious vacation even at the military’s expense?
Other bases that are canceling ceremonies to mark the nation’s birthday:
Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina, where the annual Jammin’ July 4th put on by the 20th Fighter Wing at Shaw and local city and county officials has been scrapped. The base plans a smaller “freedom bash” on July 3 with pool games, face painting and bouncy castles.
The Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Hawaii, which is scaling back by canceling the fireworks and instead hosting a daytime celebration featuring the Pacific Fleet Band and the Air Force Band of the Pacific.
New Jersey’s Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst.
