House Bill That Defunds Obamacare Also Insulates GMO Giant, Monsanto, from Lawsuits
If you thought it was legislative malpractice to use the House bill that defunds Obamacare to give a millionaire senator’s widow a $174,000 tax-free gift, you won’t believe what else is hiding in the bill!
Senator Bernie Sanders’ (I-VT) website explains the bill also contains language that further protects the controversial genetically modified (GMO) food company, Monsanto, from private lawsuits connected to side-effects from their pesticides.
The NY Daily News reports that Monsanto is losing its lawsuit protections on Sept. 30, but the rider attached to the defund Obamacare bill proposes a three month extension of what some have dubbed, the Monsanto Protection Act.
Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR) argues that Monsanto is wrongly being permitted to have “unrestricted sale and planting of variants of genetically modified seeds that a court has ruled have not been properly examined for their effect on other farmers, the environment, and human health.”
Four months ago, dozens of American cities were overrun by protesters condemning Monsanto for perceived threats to public health and independent family farmers, reports USA Today.
