Last week Javier Ortiz, the President of Miami’s Fraternal Order of Police stood in the front row at a Miami Police College promotional ceremony recording and what he was able to capture on video is leaving many individuals furious.
The video which is making waves nationally shows Miami Assistant Police Chief Anita Najiy standing defiantly with her arms by her sides as everyone else in the room recites the Pledge of Allegiance with their hands place over their hearts.
Najiy, a 32-year-veteran of the police force defends her refusal to salute the flag citing that she is exempt from doing so as a member of the honor guard… Hmmm.
Anita Najiy, who is believed by some to be a Muslim American, stands flatly while her brothers and sisters in blue recite The Pledge of Allegiance.
In doing so, Ortiz says, she failed to exhibit courtesy and etiquette that “must be exercised when wearing a law enforcement uniform.”
Furthermore, the Miami Herald states the view of Police Maj. Delrish Moss, who claims Najiy was just following military code:
Police Maj. Delrish Moss produced a section of the conduct code for U.S. military personnel, which he says supercedes police code. It reads: “When in uniform, indoors, stand at attention, remain silent, and face the flag.”
Ortiz who was not satisfied by this explanation stated that “If you’re not pledging allegiance to the United States, my question is what country are you pledging allegiance to?” Adding that “Anyone who isn’t offended by that is not American, because when you become a U.S. citizen, you pledge allegiance to the U.S.”
What are your thoughts on Najiy’s actions? Was she simply following honor guard code or is there more to this story? Let us know in the comment section below.
