The planning commission of Sterling Heights, Michigan was met with fanfare as the announcement came that they had denied the request to issue a building permit for a 20,500 square foot Mosque in a residential area.
As the announcement came down, residents outside of Sterling Heights City Hall shouted “No more mosques!” and “God bless America!” This level of excitement was not present on the Muslim side of the debate. Local Muslims made statements such as “Looks like Iraq, not USA.” and “I’m very offended that this happened.”
Another stated “Doesn’t seem like I’m in Sterling Heights, seem like I’m in Baghdad, that’s not right.”
Imam Mohammad Ali Elah told media that what happened was a clear case of “ignorance.”
